Australian Charter of Rights
Equal Opportunity Commissioner Linda Matthews welcomes the Commonwealth Government's launch of a National Human Rights Consultation.
The Consultation, announced on 10 December 2008, is designed to seek the views of the Australian community on how human rights and responsibilities should be protected in the future. This will include discussion about whether or not Australia should adopt a national charter of rights.
"Now is the time for all of us to contribute to this important discussion about human rights and how we want them to be protected", said Commissioner Matthews, urging all Australians to have their say.
Australian Council of Human Rights Agencies (ACHRA) chair, Commissioner Susan Booth, said the consultation comes at a critical time for Australian human rights.
"The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is sixty years old today and this consultation gives Australians the chance to discuss how we protect fundamental rights in the 21st century," Ms Booth said.
