Senator Mitch Fifield | Ramp Up | 20 Feb 2012

http://www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2012/02/20/3435147.htm

The fast-approaching May Budget will tell us how committed the Gillard Government really is to the NDIS, writes Senator Mitch Fifield.

Australians with disability are entitled to be wary and a little cynical with each new pronouncement on disability by political leaders. They have been let down too many times before. People with disability have become a bit like kremlinologists of old, studying the words, announcements and behaviour of politicians, trying to divine if the latest statement is an advance on a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), or if it signifies a lessening of commitment. This occurred with Tony Abbott's recent speech to the National Press Club. Some commentators construed his speech as backing away from an NDIS. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Update Eleven - 10 February 2012

Dear Friends

This morning along with the Prime Minister we visited the Family Resource and Network Support Inc (FRANS) in Sydney to speak to young adults with disability, their families and carers about a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Meeting with families who live with disability every day of their lives is so important to our work to reform the system of disability care and support.

Eva spoke to us today of the waiting list she’s been on to find supported accommodation for her 21 year old son. Hearing her concern about the kind of accommodation that’s available for him, and the waiting lists to access care, helps us design the best kind of accommodation options that will work for people with disability and their families and carers.

Update Nine - 12 December 2011

Dear Friends

We’ve said from the start that we want to make sure people with disability and their carers are at the centre of our work to build a National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Today, the Prime Minister has announced that this reform will be at the centre of government.

The Prime Minister has appointed me to the new position of Minister for Disability Reform, in addition to my responsibilities as Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. Senator Jan McLucas will continue her work as the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers.

It’s a great honour that recognises the importance of reform of disability care and support.

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME

A WAY FORWARD

Dear Friends,

Today, celebrations are occurring throughout Australia to mark 2011 International Day of People with Disability, and to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability.

It’s been a significant year for people with disability in Australia.
It has been a remarkable four months since we stood with the Prime Minister to release the Productivity Commission’s report into disability support and care. On that day we committed to start work immediately to lay the foundations for a NDIS. We have kept that promise.

I spoke to delegates from across the world of the Australian Government's support for a National Disability Insurance Scheme and of our shared goal to ensure people with disability, their families and carers have the choice, security and opportunity to participate in life, work and the community to their full potential.
